Gravitational waveforms with controlled accuracy

چکیده

A partially first-order form of the characteristic formulation is introduced to control the accuracy in the computation of gravitational waveforms produced by highly distorted single black hole spacetimes. Our approach is to reduce the system of equations to first-order differential form on the angular derivatives, while retaining the proven radial and time integration schemes of the standard characteristic formulation. This results in significantly improved accuracy over the standard mixed-order approach in the extremely nonlinear postmerger regime of binary black hole collisions.

A sparse representation of gravitational waves from precessing compact binaries

Many relevant applications in gravitational wave physics share a significant common problem: the seven-dimensional parameter space of gravitational waveforms from precessing compact binary inspirals and coalescences is large enough to prohibit covering the space of waveforms with sufficient density. We find that by using the reduced basis method together with a parametrization of waveforms base...

On the accuracy and precision of numerical waveforms: Effect of waveform extraction methodology

We present a new set of 95 numerical relativity simulations of non-precessing binary black holes (BBHs). The simulations sample comprehensively both black-hole spins up to spin magnitude of 0.9, and cover mass ratios 1 to 3. The simulations cover on average 24 inspiral orbits, plus merger and ringdown, with low initial orbital eccentricities e < 10−4. A subset of the simulations extends the cov...

Triangulation of gravitational wave sources with a network of detectors

There is significant benefit to be gained by pursuing multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational wave and electromagnetic observations. In order to undertake electromagnetic follow-ups of gravitational wave signals, it will be necessary to accurately localize them in the sky. Since gravitational wave detectors are not inherently pointing instruments, localization will occur primarily through ...

Gravitational Waves from the Merger of Binary Neutron Stars in a Fully General Relativistic Simulation

We performed 3D numerical simulations of the merger of equal-mass binary neutron stars in full general relativity using a new large scale supercomputer. We take the typical grid size as (505, 505, 253) for (x, y, z) and the maximum grid size as (633, 633, 317). These grid numbers enable us to put the outer boundaries of the computational domain near the local wave zone and hence to calculate gr...
